First step towards providing access to mainstream education
The inclusion of newly-arrived learners is actively promoted at the Migrant Learners` Unit. The well-being of those involved is also valued through the provision of a holistic educational journey which allows for the acquisition of linguistic and sociocultural competences. The unit recognises the need to succeed and stakeholders are involved throughout the educational experience to sustain such attainable goals.

Education in Malta
The Ministry of Education and Employment is responsible for the provision of education in Malta. The Directorate for Quality and Standards in Education (DQSE) is specifically responsible to regulate, evaluate, and report on the various sections of the compulsory education system, with the aim of assuring quality education for all.

Current Projects
LANGUAGE TO GO! SUMMER LANGUAGE COURSES
The Migrant Learners' Unit within The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR) organises the summer language course Language to Go! The summer language course is meant to support newcomer learners in Maltese and/or in English.

MAKING FRIENDS, BRINGING FRIENDS CLUB
The aim of the club is for participants to have an opportunity to speak and interact while participating in informal, enjoyable creative sessions. Learners who are attending school from Year 3 to Year 6 could apply.

LLAPSI+
Through the LLAPSI+ project the MLU continues to cater for the specific educational needs of students with a migrant background. It offers tailor-made language teaching and support according to the students’ needs.

Shake it OFF! Language Learning through Physical Activity
The game Fitivities, which is a smaller version of Skillastics, has been introduced by the NGO Are You Active (AYA) Malta in the induction classes. The Unit worked in collaboration with Mr Kevin Azzopardi, EO, PE in order to disseminate good practices in cross curricular teaching. READ MORE
