Language Learning and Parental Support for Integration PLUS (LLAPSI+)

Supporting students and their families with a migrant background.

Through the LLAPSI+ project the MLU continues to cater for the specific educational needs of students with a migrant background. The Migrant Learners’ Unit has a team of teachers working in schools around Malta and Gozo, offering tailor-made language teaching and support according to the students’ needs.

Activities Within the LLAPSI+ Project

The LLAPSI+ project aims to provide migrant learners in school with further support in basic and functional language learning over and above the teaching that is already provided by the class teachers.

Language To Go! – Summer Language Courses

The Migrant Learners' Unit within The Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation (MEYR) organises the summer language course Language to Go!  The summer language course is meant to support newcomer learners in Maltese and/or in English.  Each course consists of 8 sessions of one and a half hour each. Upon completing the course, learners are awarded a certificate of participation. Sessions and are held twice/three times weekly for three/four consecutive weeks.

The Community Liaison Team

As part of the LLAPSI + project, the MLU benefits from the support of a team of Community Liaison Workers (CLW) . The team members hail from various national and ethnic backgrounds. The Community Liaison Workers’ primary role is to assist in establishing a link between parents, learners and schools.

The Migrant Learners’ Unit started operating from its new premises, co-financed by the European Union through the project LLAPSI+ in 2020.

Making Friends, Bringing Friends Club

The Migrant Learners’ Unit, in collaboration with the Foundation for Educational Services (FES), organised the Making Friends – Bringing Friends after school club. The aim of the club is for participants to have an opportunity to speak and interact while participating in informal, enjoyable creative sessions. A snack is served at the beginning of each session.
